Crafted by Atwooki from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket combines artistry with cultural heritage. Atwooki engages in basket weaving as part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, alongside other women, using naturally dyed raffia supplied by the initiative.
This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Atwooki was tasked with interpreting the cultural elements of artist Maria Olivia Nakato, affiliated with Buganda Kingdom in central Uganda, with a focus on color and shape. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.
Using locally sourced plant materials such as banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Atwooki’s hands go beyond household chores to weave baskets, preserving a cultural practice deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda. Through her craft, she unknowingly keeps this heritage alive, ensuring its continuity in contemporary artistic expressions.
