Crafted by Atwooki from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket embodies both artistry and cultural heritage. As part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, Atwooki weaves alongside other women, using natural-dyed raffia sourced through the initiative.
This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Atwooki was tasked with interpreting the cultural heritage of artist Fatuma Hassan, drawing inspiration from the colors and shapes of the Wadai Kingdom in Chad, Central Africa. You can learn more about the festival here.
Using locally sourced plant materials such as banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Atwooki’s hands go beyond daily household tasks to create intricate woven designs. Through her craft, she unknowingly preserves a tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, ensuring the continuity of this heritage in contemporary forms.
