Handcrafted by Adyeeri from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket seamlessly combines artistry with cultural heritage. Adyeeri is part of a community weaving program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, alongside other women, and uses natural-dyed raffia sourced through the initiative.

This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Adyeeri was tasked with interpreting the cultural elements of artist Kevin Murungi, who is affiliated with the Bunyoro Kingdom in Western Uganda, with a focus on color and shapes. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.

Using locally found materials like banana leaf stalks and plant dyes, Adyeeri’s hands go beyond household tasks to create beautiful woven baskets. Through her work, she unknowingly preserves a cultural tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, ensuring the continuity of this heritage in modern forms.
