Artisan Story & Commission
This piece is crafted by Akiiki, a skilled weaver from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, who weaves as part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu. Through this initiative, artisans receive naturally dyed raffia, keeping traditional weaving techniques alive.
This basket was commissioned as part of the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Akiiki was selected to interpret elements of Monica Ahairwebyona’s cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from the colors and shapes of the Bakiga people from Kigezi in western Uganda. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.
Using locally sourced plant materials like banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Akiiki’s craftsmanship extends beyond utility ”preserving the rich traditions of the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom while contributing to contemporary African artistry. This handwoven piece is more than a connection to heritage, creativity, and craftsmanship.
