Crafted by Akiiki from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket represents a unique fusion of artistry and cultural heritage. Akiiki engages in basket weaving as part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, alongside other women, using naturally dyed raffia provided by the initiative.
This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Akiiki was tasked with interpreting elements of artist Sandra Wauye’s cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from the colors and shapes of the Luo people of western Kenya. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.
Using locally sourced plant materials such as banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Akiiki’s hands move beyond daily household tasks to create intricate woven designs. Through her craft, she unknowingly preserves a tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, ensuring that this heritage continues to thrive in contemporary expressions.
