Crafted by Atwooki from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket is a beautiful fusion of artistry and cultural heritage. Atwooki participates in basket weaving as part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, alongside other women, using naturally dyed raffia supplied through the initiative.
This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Atwooki was tasked with interpreting the cultural elements of artist Catherine Lie, affiliated with the People’s Republic of China in Eastern Asia, focusing on color and shape. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.
Using locally sourced plant materials such as banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Atwooki’s hands move beyond daily household tasks to create intricate woven designs. Through her craft, she preserves a tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, ensuring that this heritage continues to thrive in contemporary expressions.
