Crafted by Amooti from Buheesi village in Fort Portal, this basket is a beautiful blend of artistry and cultural heritage. As part of a community program led by Mzee Patrick Apuuli Ntungu, Amooti weaves alongside other women, using natural-dyed raffia sourced through the initiative.

This commission was part of the Bulungi Bwansi project by Jim Joel during the 2024 KLA Arts Festival, organized by 32° East Arts Centre. Amooti was tasked with interpreting elements of artist Rebecca Khamala Kara’s cultural heritage, focusing on the colors and shapes inspired by the Luhya and Samai ethnic groups in eastern Uganda. You can learn more about the festival and its events here.

Using locally sourced plant materials such as banana leaf stalks and natural dyes, Amooti’s hands move beyond daily household tasks to create intricate woven designs. Through her craft, she unknowingly preserves a tradition deeply rooted in the Batooro people of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, ensuring that this heritage continues to thrive in contemporary expressions.
